2025 Field Trips
Little White Salmon Monitoring Tour
Our final field trip of 2025 featured a field tour of pre-treatment monitoring work on the Little White Salmon watershed, part of the USFS’ Little White Salmon Forest Resiliency and Fire Risk Mitigation Project and a focus of SGPC discussion between 2022-25. Cascade Forest Conservancy (CFC) and Mt. Adams Resource Stewards (MARS)—longtime SGPC partner organizations—are spearheading this work using WA Dept. Natural Resources’ monitoring protocol.
Active Logging Tour with High Cascade
This field trip featured a tour of High Cascade’s active logging operations and was led by Jon Paul Anderson of High Cascade, a longtime SGPC member. Those in attendance enjoyed stops to observe a thinning unit as well as the ins and outs of wood processing. The group also discussed and flagged the process of tethered logging for future collaborative discussions.
Williams Mine Fire & MARS Prescribed Fire Tours
This field trip featured tours of both the Williams Mine Fire (coordinated by the USFS) and prescribed fire work conducted by Mt. Adams Resource Stewards. This fire-themed trip allowed SGPC members to observe important management efforts and consider how prescribed fire and other tools can help control/mitigate the impacts of large fires on and near GPNF.
Carson National Fish Hatchery Tour
This field trip featured a tour of the Carson National Fish Hatchery led by Larry Zeigenfuss, hatchery manager. This involved hearing about the hatchery’s formation, salmon recovery efforts and associated management practices, and how the hatchery faces and overcomes various challenges such as fish depredation, funding uncertainties, and staffing.
