Yakama Nation Reservation Resource Management Field Tour

This field trip will consist of a tour of the sovereign lands of the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation to learn about their ongoing natural resource management efforts. This trip is one component of our tribal engagement work funded by the National Forest Foundation’s Collaborative Capacity Program for Forests & Communities. This broader tribal engagement work will result in a SGPC Tribal Engagement Plan.

Joint GPNF Collaborative Field Tour of E. Fork Lewis River Plantation Thinning

This joint field trip with the Pinchot Partners, our collaborative counterparts on the north zone of the Forest, will consist of a tour of planned timber sales coming out of East Fork Lewis (i.e., Forest-wide Plantation Thinning) with a social hour afterwards (details TBD).

USFS Trout Lake Planning Area Field Tour

At this field trip, we will tour the next USFS (Mt. Adams Ranger District) planning area near Trout Lake. Potential topics of discussion might include proposed management actions such as fuel breaks and the use of Emergency Situation Determination and Categorical Exclusions.

Little White Salmon Monitoring Tour

Our final field trip of 2025 featured a field tour of pre-treatment monitoring work on the Little White Salmon watershed, part of the USFS’ Little White Salmon Forest Resiliency and Fire Risk Mitigation Project and a focus of SGPC discussion between 2022-25. Cascade Forest Conservancy (CFC) and Mt. Adams Resource Stewards (MARS)—longtime SGPC partner organizations—are spearheading this work using WA Dept. Natural Resources’ monitoring protocol.

Active Logging Tour with High Cascade

This field trip featured a tour of High Cascade’s active logging operations and was led by Jon Paul Anderson of High Cascade, a longtime SGPC member. Those in attendance enjoyed stops to observe a thinning unit as well as the ins and outs of wood processing. The group also discussed and flagged the process of tethered logging for future collaborative discussions.

Williams Mine Fire & MARS Prescribed Fire Tours

This field trip featured tours of both the Williams Mine Fire (coordinated by the USFS) and prescribed fire work conducted by Mt. Adams Resource Stewards. This fire-themed trip allowed SGPC members to observe important management efforts and consider how prescribed fire and other tools can help control/mitigate the impacts of large fires on and near GPNF.

Carson National Fish Hatchery Tour

This field trip featured a tour of the Carson National Fish Hatchery led by Larry Zeigenfuss, hatchery manager. This involved hearing about the hatchery’s formation, salmon recovery efforts and associated management practices, and how the hatchery faces and overcomes various challenges such as fish depredation, funding uncertainties, and staffing.
